I got to thinking, since we are on the subject of air conditioning (read post from 9/28/10). Do you live in an older home? have you ever looked at the ducting (ducting are the big tubes that the air flows through from the Air conditioning unit) ?
I have two sets of people I know who recently told me about asbestos ducting in their attic. The areas they live in are Monterey Park and Montebello , California. These two areas are pretty near to each other. Now asbestos ducting undisturbed is harmless- at least that’s what we’re told, but in both cases the ducting had been crushed (stepped on) in a couple of spots. The asbestos lining around the ducting had flaked and possibly blown down the duct into the occupied space. Asbestos has been linked to a variety of long term lung illnesses one being mesothelioma. In both cases the homeowners found professional asbestos abatement companies to deal with the ridding of the asbestos.
This post is not to alarm anybody in the web-o-sphere!! Just a “HELLO” and let’s take a look, maybe the place you feel safest may have something harmful within it. Take a peek in the attic/basement or find someone you trust to take a look and take some pictures of what you may have in the attic or basement.
One of the home owners said the stamp on the ducting read “ALUMIBESTOS” it was a regular steel duct coated in asbestos- a white ceramic looking substance, then wrapped in a silver “foil” like covering.
Both homeowners paid about $1000.00 to get rid of the asbestos. There are regulations regarding the disposal of this material.
I hope this post doesn’t alarm you, but just have you become more aware! This post would definitely fall under the category of more life!!
We work all our lives to relax and enjoy our retirement- lets make sure we get there in the best shape possible.
Bottoms-up!! enjoy ur beer! K.Z.
